Apply for a Clayton Smith Memorial Scholarship

Running was more than a sport to Clayton—it was about heart, grit, and showing up for your teammates. This scholarship honors his enduring passion by supporting student-athletes who embody that same dedication both on the track and in the classroom.

The Clayton Smith Memorial Foundation awards annual scholarships to graduating high school student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and a deep love for track and field or cross-country.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Standing: Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

  • Athletic Dedication: Be a graduating high school senior who has actively participated on a high school track and field or cross-country team for a minimum of two years.

  • Higher Education: Provide proof of acceptance or intent to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or trade school for the upcoming academic term.

Once your application is received, it will be reviewed and you will be notified by email and/or phone if you are chosen.

  1. Personal Essay (500–750 words):

    Choose one of the following prompts to guide your response:

    “Describe a moment on the track where you faced a significant challenge or setback, how you persevered through it, and how that experience shaped your character. Explain how this will help you with your future goals.”

    “What does your passion for track and field mean to you, and how do you plan to carry the lessons learned through running into your future endeavors?”

  2. Letters of Recommendation (2 total):

    One letter must come from your current track and field or cross-country coach, speaking to your work ethic, teamwork, and leadership.

    One letter may come from a teacher, counselor, or community mentor.

  3. Athletic & Extracurricular Summary:

    Provide a summary or resume of your athletic achievements, personal records, team leadership roles, community service, and extracurricular activities.

  4. Academic Transcript

    Provide an unofficial copy of your high school transcript, showing your grades making up your GPA.

  5. Contact Information
